Our last few posts have been about developing speed and some of the approaches that can make an athlete quicker with science driven principles that are targeted towards gaining speed. So if you didn't take the time to read those posts now in order to better understand a little about this system.

If you have read them and are following this series, thank you and you are aware that in order to be fast in a safe manner, you need enough mobility, an increasing level of strength and power, as well as proper technique and joint angles for speed.

This week's post is the third installment on this need for athletic performance and how to improve it.

This post will cover how to train this energy system with conditioning, and the use of external implements to increase power and speed for sports.

After you develop good technique and have adequate mobility, you can begin to add in external resistance such as: bands, chains, and sled, speed chutes and so-on. Otherwise if you don't have good technique, you will simply be training the athlete to continue to make the mistakes with technique that they may be making and will have a very hard time trying to correct the issues learned afterwards

After using these approaches, you can begin to condition of course as it goes with any training goal, Your training needs to be specific to the goal of speed. In other words, you must do each and every rep fast or else you are not training for speed and may end up slower as a result.

Then in the weight room, you will want to work the energy system that is used in speed in an explosive way that will transfer over to running and help you achieve higher levels of speed for sports. This can be done by using quick barbell lifts, jumps and so-on.
